It’s impossible not to love the warm, welcoming feel of hardwood floors. Not only do they add a sense of comfort, but they also add beauty and incredible value to a home. If you’re considering having wood floors installed, you should carefully evaluate whether traditional hardwood or engineered wood is best for your lifestyle. We can recommend the most trustworthy flooring suppliers in the St. Louis area where you will find materials to fit your budget, and if you prefer, we will deliver it to you for free. When you hire the professional installation experts at MJ Flooring, you can be sure your beautiful new floors will last for many years to come!

The Differences Between Hardwood and Engineered Wood

While traditional hardwood planks are made from one solid strip of ¾” wood, engineered planks are built with a thin veneer layer on the surface then fused with crisscrossed layers of plywood underneath. These differences give each type of flooring their own pros and cons.

Moisture and humidity.
Hardwood floors don’t do well when wet, in humidity levels above 55%, or in temperature fluctuations. The solid planks will expand and contract easily, causing them to separate. In engineered wood, the bottom layer of plywood provides superior strength to help resist expansion and contraction.
Durability.
Hardwood floors are often made of softer species like pine so they will scratch easily with pets, but can be sanded and refinished multiple times for a fresh new look. Engineered flooring is made from hard species like birch, maple and bamboo, so it will resist scratches but is susceptible to chipping with extreme wear.
Installation location.
Solid wood floors must be nailed or stapled down and they’re best in dry areas, so they are great in living rooms and bedrooms. Engineered floors can be nailed, glued, or clicked together in a “floating” format, and they stand up to some moisture. This makes it possible to install them in living areas as well as some kitchens and basements.
Cost and Lifespan.
Solid hardwood flooring is generally more expensive than engineered flooring, but it can last a lifetime especially when installed by MJ Flooring. We staple hardwood planks 3-4 inches apart in order to prevent them from forming gaps, which can really make a difference in their long-term appearance. Engineered planks are more affordable and more durable than hardwood, but in general lasts for 20-30 years. This is plenty of time for many, but something to consider if you have many more years left in your home!
